LEW STONE earned his place in the top rank of British dance band leaders the hard way. He was a pianist and busy freelance arranger, who took charge of the house band at the Monseigneur Restaurant in Piccadilly by accident in 1932, when the American celebrity conductor Roy Fox fell ill and Lew stepped up from the piano stool to take his place. He went on to create the musical style for one of the most successful broadcast and recording dance bands of the pre-war years: a period now recognised as a Golden Age of popular music, when the congenial atmosphere and explosion of musical talent that centred on the West End of London spread out to ballrooms and theatres nationwide on the wings of radio.

TONY STAVEACRE has written this full account of Lew Stone's life in collaboration with Lew's widow Joyce, whose reminiscences, recorded on many hours of tape in her 98th year, give this musical biography a very personal dimension. Tony Staveacre is also the author of 'Al Bowlly' (biography), 'The Songwriters' and 'Slapstick!'. He has written several musical plays for the theatre, including 'Fred Karno's Army' , 'Wodehouse on Broadway', 'Follies of Weston-super-Mare' and 'The Very Thought of You'. Since 1964 he has devised and produced hundreds of programmes for television and radio on popular culture themes.
